Max Fried is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball. He is nicknamed "Maximus" and was born on January 18, 1994 in Santa Monica, California.
At the age of seven, Max began attending the Reggie Smith Baseball Academy in Encino, California, where he learned how to throw a curveball from the former outfielder. Fried was a member of the Maccabiah Games Team USA Juniors baseball team, which earned a gold medal for baseball in Israel in 2009. Fried then attended Montclair College in Van Nuys. Fried was 7-3 with a 1.31 ERA in his junior year, striking out 100 batters in 69 innings while also playing outfield and batting .360 with four home runs and 30 RBIs. He was selected the 2011 Male High School Athlete of the Year by the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2017, Fried made his Major League debut with the Atlanta Braves. In the decisive game of the 2021 World Series against the Houston Astros, Fried threw six shutout innings, helping the Braves win their first World Series in 26 years. In 2020, Fried won the Fielding Bible Award and the NL Gold Glove Award for pitcher. He became only the third pitcher in Major League history to win both accolades in 2021 after winning the Gold Glove Award and the Silver Slugger Award. During those two years, he was also selected for the All-MLB Team. He was selected as an All-Star in 2022 and won his third straight Gold Glove Award for pitching.
