Now that the excitement of the trade deadline has passed, teams have shifted their attention to providing some injury updates regarding the health of some of their stars. Some of today's injury updates revolve around some of the league's oldest and most accomplished pitchers, as well as one of the most polarizing players in the MLB.

MLB Injury Updates for July 31

Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer's resume speaks for itself at this point in his career. However, at 40 years old, his best days are clearly behind him. Although he may still be able to pitch a gem here and there, his body simply may no longer be able to hold up. The Texas Rangers starter felt arm fatigue for the second time in his last three starts, and now the club may need to monitor his usage for the rest of the year.

Lance Lynn

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that they have placed veteran starter Lance Lynn on the 15-day IL after experiencing right knee inflammation. According to MLB insider Katie Woo, Lynn's knee injury isn't considered overly serious and the star will simply rest before working his way back to the rotation. Given Lynn's age (37), the Cards may want to proceed with caution in terms of recovery.

Justin Verlander

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said that future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander could be sent out on a rehab assignment soon. While Espada did not provide a specific date, the fact that Verlander is nearly ready to return to the mound is massive for an Astros club looking to secure a postseason berth. Luis Garcia is also nearing a rehab assignment as well for the Astros.

Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees star Gerrit Cole has been going through it lately. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has reportedly been dealing with a stomach virus over the last week, while also dealing with "body fatigue" after his last start. All that being said, Cole is expected to make his upcoming start on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jacob deGrom

The second Texas Rangers injury update on this list involves superstar Jacob deGrom. The veteran starter has been working his way back from Tommy John Surgery and hopes to return to the rotation before the end of the year. This past weekend, deGrom tossed a 45-pitch bullpen session, expressing that he felt good afterward.

Anthony Rendon

The only non-pitcher to appear on this list is the polarizing Anthony Rendon. The Los Angeles Angels provided an injury update on the third baseman, announcing that the veteran has been placed on the IL with back inflammation. Rendon has been limited to only 233 games since the beginning of 2020, and will yet again be forced out of action.
