Freddie Freeman had to exit Tuesday's game against Team Colombia in the World Baseball Classic due to injury. He left the game after his at-bat in the third inning after seemingly tweaking his hamstring. He jogged gingerly to first base after his flyout into the outfield.
It's a tough pill to swallow for Team Canada, as Freeman is the heart and soul of the team.
Nobody wants to see any of the players competing in this tournament go down with an injury. They all have professional teams to make it back to and a season to play.
Freeman is especially important in the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup now that they have lost Trea Turner to free agency. Fans are hoping this injury is only minor, and that he took himself out as a precaution.
"And people say the WBC is a good thing? It's not," one fan tweeted.
"Oh boy, that's not good, love Freddie," responded another fan.
There's no way this tournament can be played without injuries. It's going to happen; that's just part of the game. Players understand this risk when committing. No sport is ever 100% safe.
Injury risk is a big reason why a ton of qualified players don't play. Team USA had a problem putting together a competent pitching staff. A lot of MLB pitchers would rather focus on the season than this tournament.
Freddie Freeman playing in World Baseball Classic to honor his mother
Freddie Freeman wasn't shy about explaining why he chose to play for Team Canada in this World Baseball Classic. He's doing it to honor his mother, Rosemary, who passed away when he was 10 years old.
Freeman was born in the United States, but both of his parents are Canadian. He also has dual citizenship.
Freeman has meant a great deal to Team Canada from the moment he arrived. Early in camp, players complained about the fit of their practice apparel. Many players on the team opted to practice in shorts instead of baseball pants until they saw Freeman wearing his pants. The whole team then put their practice pants back on.
That's how respected Freddie Freeman is. He plays the game the right way, is never involved in any drama, and is a complete role model for young baseball players. He's somebody every baseball player should aspire to be.
