3 trades the Rockies could make to avoid another disastrous season

Since their inception in 1993, the Colorado Rockies have never won the NL West, making them the only team in MLB to have never won a divisional title. One of only two teams to have never won a World Series, the Rockies have also only posted two winning seasons since 2010.

As the 2024 season begins to take form, fans in the Mile High City are witnessing a familiar storyline. Now 20-35, the Colorado Rockies are last in their division and have more strikeouts against than all but one other team in the National League.

While the problems with the Colorado Rockies are plentiful and complex, today we are going to be examining some potential moves that the team can make to try and salvage the season from turning into yet another complete disaster.

Three advisable trades for the Colorado Rockies

Ezequiel Tovar

Venezuelan infielder Ezequiel Tovar signed with the Colorado Rockies on his 16th birthday in 2017. Having made his debut with them in 2021, Tovar's career has been a mixed bag. In 2023, his first full season, Tovar flexed his bat, hitting .253 with 15 home runs and 73 RBIs.

In 2023, the shortstop is hitting .286 with seven home runs, but also boasts a league-high 74 strikeouts. By dealing Tovar, who is still in pre-arbitration, the Rockies could attract teams who are looking for a reliable young star, and also give him a chance to win elsewhere.

Right now, pitching needs to a priority for the Rockies, and trading a rising star like Tovar may be one of the best trade-ins the team has to that end.

Austin Gomber

The Rockies' 5.27 ERA is the worst in the entire MLB. However, starting pitcher Austin Gomber has not contributed to it. The left-hander's 2.76 ERA is the best on the rotation, something potential buyers around the league are all too aware of.

Gomber arrived in Colorado from the St. Louis Cardinals as part of the 2021 Nolan Arenado deal. However, at 30, it's unlikely that Gomber's arm will lead the team to postseason success alone.

By trading Gomber to a contender, the Rockies could cash in on some young pitchers. The fact that Gomber's one year, $3.15 million deal will expire after this season gives Rockies GM Bill Schmidt all the more reason to shop him around.

Charlie Blackmon

A member of the Rockies since 2011, the only notable playoff experience that Charlie Blackmon has is three games against the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2018 NLDS.

At 37, it's likely that Blackmon will be retiring soon, but the outfielder can still hit. A .294 career batter, it might be worthwhile for the Rockies to trade Blackmon to a contending but young team like the Baltimore Orioles or the Cleveland Guardians.

By executing such a trade, the receptors would acquire invaluable experience in their clubhouse, while the Colorado Rockies would be able to use Blackmon's past success to build towards their own future.
