The New York Yankees had a vacant spot in the infield after first baseman Anthony Rizzo became a free agent following the 2024 season. The Yankees reportedly signed veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to replace Rizzo earlier this month.
The franchise announced the signing of the former MVP to a one-year deal for $12.5 million on Monday.
"The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed seven-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove Award winner and the 2022 National League Most Valuable Player INF Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year Major League contract."
Fans swarmed to the comment section to express their opinions, with several urging the team to sign more players.
"Announce Correa," wrote a fan, urging the Bronx Bombers to sign Carlos Correa.
Another fan expressed disappointment as it wasn't Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki's signing.
"I thought this was Roki Sasaki."
"Never a good sign when you have to mention all their past accolades. Almost feels like your selling us on this," wrote another disappointed fan.
"Just hope he play better than Rizzo," wrote a hopeful fan.
"Taking time with our acquisition announcements but welcome Goldy! Hope u do well for us," wrote a fan.
A seven-time All-Star, Paul Goldschmidt started his MLB career with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011. He spent the last five years with the St. Louis Cardinals and was named the NLCS MVP in 2022.
Yankees linked with Paul Goldschmidt's former Cardinals teammate
Following Paul Goldschmidt's arrival in the Bronx, the Yankees have also been linked with his former Cardinals teammate Nolan Arenado. However, a trade for the veteran third baseman seems unlikely according to Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic.
"(Although) the Yankees like Arenado, they aren't interested in taking on the majority of his contract, something that would almost certainly need to happen from the Cardinals perspective," Sammon and Woo wrote.
The Yankees have strengthened the roster by bringing in Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger after missing out on a blockbuster deal for Juan Soto. They are also linked with another third baseman Alex Bregman, who elected for free agency after the 2024 season with the Houston Astros.
