The Arizona Diamondbacks took a big step into their franchise rebuild Saturday by agreeing to an eight-year, $111 million contract extension with budding star Corbin Carroll.

Carroll, inked in as the Diamondbacks' centerfielder of the future, wowed fans earlier this week by showing off his speed in blazing around the bases for a triple in a Spring Training game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Carroll, the 16th pick in the 2019 draft, has slotted in to be the leadoff hitter for a youthful Arizona team this season. Not set to turn 23 until August, his playmaking abilities and blinding speed rocketed him up the minor league ranks before he made his big league debut for 32 games late last season.

Carroll hit .260 with nine doubles, two triples and four home runs over 104 at-bats. However, he struck out 31 times while walking just eight times.

News of Corbin Carroll's contract extension brought praise for the Arizona Diamondbacks from fans around the league. These fans are now clamoring for their teams to lock up their young potential superstars as well.

Carroll hasn't established himself as a dominant base-stealer as of yet. He attempted just three steals in his 32 major league games last season and was caught once.

However, that small sample size of stats isn't keeping Diamondbacks fans from dreaming big about the five-tool possibilities Corbin seems to possess.

Many fans on Twitter were curious as to why young players like Carroll sign contracts for low dollar amounts when they could potentially cash in during the years to come. However, it's not like $111 million isn't a lot of money - especially for a 22-year-old.

Corbin Carroll played in just 174 minor league games before his call-up to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He hit .302 overall in stops at Class A, Double-A and Triple-A, and pounded out 22 home runs total for three separate Arizona farm clubs in 2022. However, predicting 50, 60 or more stolen bases from him in 2023 may be far-fetched as he stole just 32 over his 174 games in the minors.
