The Atlanta Braves will be without catcher Travis d'Arnaud for atleast a week after he was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list.
The move is a major setback for an organization that is off to a strong 6-3 start this season. The Braves are currently in first place in the National League East, a game ahead of the New York Mets.
Travis d'Arnaud was removed from Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres after a collision at the plate with Rougned Odor.
The club announced that Chadwick Tromp will be called up as a replacement for d'Arnaud.
MLB fans took to Twitter to break down what the injury means for a Braves team that is one of the favorites to win it all in 2023.
Travis d'Arnaud is regarded as one of MLB's elite catchers. He was a 2022 All-Star and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2020. He was also a member of the Atlanta Braves' 2021 World Series championship side.
Over his first eight games of the season, d'Arnaud has an impressive .333/.333/.424 slash line. He has already recorded five RBIs and 11 hits off just 33 at-bats.
The Atlanta Braves will look to Sean Murphy and Chadwick Tromp as replacements for Travis d'Arnaud
Chadwick Tromp will have some big shoes to fill. The 28-year-old made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants back in 2020. He has 34 major league games under his belt and has a lifetime .241 batting average.
The Atlanta Braves do have depth in the catcher position. The club traded for highly rated Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy in the offseason. Murphy was a Gold Glove winner in 2021 and was one of the A's standout players last season. He finished the 2022 season with 18 home runs, 66 RBIs and .758 OPS.
Braves fans will definitely miss d'Arnaud, who is one of the leaders in the clubhouse. The injury will provide Tromp with an opportunity to show what he can do in the big leagues. Murphy will likely take over as the team's starting catcher.
