The Miami Marlins will be sporting their first-ever jersey patch sponsor in 2023. Fans will see an ADT patch on the jersey sleeve this year. The deal pays $5 million annually for the next three seasons.
ADT is a United States-based security company. Alongside being a patch on the jersey, the company's logo will also be featured across LoanDepot park.
MLB allowed teams to start using jersey patches as advertisements last year. The Marlins join the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Angels, and Arizona Diamondbacks. All teams will feature an advertising patch on their jerseys this year.
Baseball fans have been wary about this ever since it was announced. They don't want their favorite team's jersey to resemble a soccer kit or a NASCAR car with tons of sponsors all over them.
"Protected from going over .500," tweeted Atlanta Braves mascot Blooper.
"Wow that looks awful," tweeted another fan.
Atlanta Braves mascot Blooper didn't hold back when talking about their division foe. We might have a new heated rivalry on our hands.
This will soon become the norm in baseball. More and more teams are starting to adopt on-field advertisements. This will be something that baseball fans will have to get used to.
A healthy Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be huge for the Miami Marlins this season
The Miami Marlins didn't have the season they had hoped for in 2022. They finished with a 69-93 record and missed the playoffs.
They missed the playoffs despite Sandy Alcantara winning the National League Cy Young Award. The Marlins didn't have enough outside of their quality starting rotation.
It didn't help that they were missing Jazz Chisholm Jr. for much of the season last year. He was dealing with a back issue that cost him 102 games. At one point last year, he couldn't walk or lie down without experiencing pain.
He's healthy now and is transferring to a new position, the outfield. Chisholm Jr. offered to move to the outfield if the team did not find a viable candidate in the offseason.
Instead, the team traded for slugging infielder Luis Arraez from the Minnesota Twins. Arraez should bring good value to the team as he won the American League batting title last season.
It's going to be an interesting year for the Miami Marlins. Expect a much better team than they put on the field last year.
