The World Baseball Classic wrapped up quarterfinal play with a matchup between Team USA and Team Venezuela. Team Venezuela got off to a hot start in the tournament, going 4-0 in pool D, the "pool of death."
Team USA, backed by their stacked offense, got to pitcher Martin Perez, putting up three quick runs in the 1st inning. But wild pitching put Team USA in a hole as they found themselves down by two runs in the eighth inning. They battled to get the bases loaded, and Trea Turner hit the biggest home run of his career to put Team USA up by two. It would be the final scoring play as Team USA defeated Team Venezuela 9-7.
It was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. The game went back and forth, with many players stepping up on both sides. Luis Arraez hit two home runs himself in the game for Team Venezuela.
This was the perfect game to wrap up quarterfinal play. The semifinals will take place with Team USA taking on Team Cuba on Sunday. Team Mexico faces Samurai Japan on Monday on the other side of the bracket.
"No doubt in one of the most exciting fashions imagineable in the sport of baseball" one fan tweeted.
"Let's go! What a win!" said another fan.
Fans couldn't be happier with the game. Early runs, back-and-forth, and a dramatic comeback; they couldn't have asked for more.
One thing you can't do is count this Team USA lineup out. They are stacked with great hitters from top to bottom. It doesn't take much for them to score many runs in a hurry.
Team USA's pitching continues to be a question mark throughout the World Baseball Classic
Team USA has looked great on the offensive side of the ball but hasn't done the same on the pitching side. Lance Lynn battled, throwing four innings and giving up two runs, but the real problem came in relief as Lynn left the game.
Daniel Bard came in for Lynn in the fifth and had zero control over his pitches. He threw 17 pitches while giving up four runs. Team USA can't have another blunder like this in the bullpen if they expect to repeat as World Baseball Classic champions.
It will be interesting to see if Team USA's pitching can hold up the rest of the way.
