Blaze Jordan showed warrior-like grit, as well as a philosophical side, after taking a horrific blow that left him in a lot of pain. The Boston Red Sox prospect was hit in the face by a 97-mph fastball on Friday evening, giving him a swollen eye and a nasty cut, although the consequences could very well have been far worse for him.
The 20-year-old has apparently escaped without suffering any severe damage, as he posted a tweet with a photograph of himself after the incident, which was later shared on Instagram by Jomboy Media.
"Baseball can be rough sometimes," Jordan said. "97 to the face didn't feel too great. But all part of God's plan."
Ranked as the No. 7 prospect among first basemen by MLB Pipeline at the start of this season, Blaze Jordan was selected in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He started the year with the Portland Seadogs in AA, who were up against the Altoona Curve on Friday evening.
The Seadogs were trailing 12-8 when Blaze Jordan came up to bat in the ninth inning. On a 1-1 count, the Altoona reliever on the mound threw a misplaced fastball traveling at 97 mph that slid in just beneath the lid of the helmet and smashed into his face. Jordan fell to the ground immediately as he grabbed his face.
The trainers and coaches rushed onto the field and took Jordan out of the game, but he seems to be out of any serious danger.
Injury deals another blow to a challenging season for Red Sox prospect Blaze Jordan
Although he is considered to have a high ceiling for development, Blaze Jordan has not quite progressed as he would have wanted to this season.
Jordan was transferred to the Portland Seadogs in 2023, and he made a positive start upon his promotion to the AA level. However, his offensive production has dipped this year even though his average has stayed the same. Jordan only has a .709 slugging percentage for the 2024 season and hit just 7 home runs from over 300 plate appearances in 70 games.
