The 2024 MLB season could aptly be described as a nightmare from Bo Bichette's point of view. On account of injury issues, the shortstop has only appeared in about 60% of his team's games this year and has struggled mightily when he has found himself in the lineup.
On Aug. 19, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Bichette's days as a Toronto Blue Jay are numbered. According to the MLB Insider:
"The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to entertain trade offers this winter for shortstop Bo Bichette, who has no plans to stay in Toronto once he's a free agent after the 2025 season."
Predictably, Nightengale's indication sent trade rumors flying. Seeing as though Bichette's three-year, $33.6 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays expires after next season, many believe that the club might proactively deal Bichette away.
On the "Blair and Barker Show" podcast on the Toronto-based Sportsnet Network, MLB analyst Jon Morosi discussed the possible trade situation. According to Morosi, the Los Angeles Dodgers could be a prime contender.
Morosi outlined the fact that the Dodgers still have a lot of questions at shortstop. After trading Miguel Rojas, and placing Mookie Betts back in the outfield, LA now looks to Gavin Lux to fulfill the position. If Lux fails to impress, according to Morosi, Bichette could be an option. Morosi also added that the trade, although perhaps necessary, will not be popular with Jays fans.
Still only 26, Bo Bichette has led the AL in hits twice. Last year, Bichette's .306 average was the eighth-highest in baseball, and he smacked 20 home runs and 73 RBIs. This year, the Florida-born shortstop has hit a regrettable .223/.276/.321 with four home runs and 30 RBIs.
Jays will need to decide Bo Bichette's future soon
It has now been over a month since Bo Bichette's last MLB appearance. Although the star has a strong record, potential buyers could be spooked by his injury issues. However, Nightengale believes a trade is still the most likely outcome:
"I absolutely believe Bo needs a change of scenery. I think everything we’ve seen tells us that."
Regardless of the appetite for Bichette among other teams, if he has lost a desire to remain in Toronto himself, the decision is likely as good as made.
