The Boston Red Sox have increased and enhanced their analytics department in recent seasons in an attempt to build the best team possible. Analytics have been exceedingly prevalent in MLB for some time now, so it is not surprising to see the Red Sox heading in that direction.

Jen McCaffery of The Athletic shared the details of the expansion to the Red Sox's analytics department on Twitter.

This is likely the reality for most, if not all, professional baseball teams. The Houston Astros, who are one of the best MLB teams of the past decade, have a robust analytics department. The Oakland Athletics famously pioneered the 'Moneyball' system in the early 2000s, which led to great success. Now the Boston Red Sox are looking to take steps in that direction.

Despite the results that the use of analytics has had recently, some fans are still against the concept.

Reluctance to accept analytics is rampant in most major sports in North America. The NHL and NFL are both extremely reluctant to embrace the new concepts, while the NBA and MLB are both warming up to them. In reality, analytics is another source of information that can help make decisions involving your team. Not wanting them at all is shortsighted, as is relying solely upon them.

The Boston Red Sox have been struggling in recent seasons and need to start turning things around. Finishing below the Baltimore Orioles and having a losing record in 2022 could be their rock bottom in recent memory. Better analytics will help them prepare for the future and improve steadily as time progresses.

There is a prevalent theory that only people who live and breathe baseball should be allowed to help inform baseball decisions. However, pairing that real-world experience with the benefits of factual information seems like the best path forward.

The Boston Red Sox are one of the most historic franchises in the sport, so it is not shocking that their fans are wary of these enhancements.

The Red Sox managed to retain Rafael Devers this offseason, but they did lose All-Star Xander Bogaerts. They added no big-name free agents and are running back an eerily similar roster to last season.

While they will likely do better so long as they don't underperform again, getting above .500 by the end will prove to be a challenge.
