The New York Mets have continued their pursuit of a postseason spot after having a truly dreadful start to the season. New York finds itself hot on the heels of its division rivals, sitting only 2.0 games back of the Atlanta Braves for an NL Wild Card spot heading into Thursday's action.
Despite currently sitting outside of the postseason, the New York Mets have continued to put on a show for their fans. Earlier this summer, the team had McDonald's purple mascot Grimace throw out an opening pitch which led to the team going on a red-hot stretch at the plate.

Well, it looks like the team's front office attempted to give itself another good luck charm. This time, it wasn't another fast-food mascot who threw out the team's ceremonial first pitch but Hailey Welch, who is better known as the "Hawk Tuah Girl." Unlike like the lovable Grimace, having the "Hawk Tuah Girl" throw the opening pitch has not gone over well with fans.
"Civilization has hit a new low. Thanks," one fan posted on social media
"Its over. See you in 2025," another shared.
"This is going to reverse the grimace magic," one more fan posted.
Hailey Welch gained instant internet fame back in June after she appeared in a video by Tim & Dee TV on YouTube. Since then, the "Hawk Tuah Girl" has made public appearances at concerts and events, as well as a DJ set hosted by NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal.
"This is an embarrassment," a fan shared online.
"What an awful, awful decision to legitimize her and give her a platform," another posted.
"If that’s not a curse I don’t know what is," one more fan shared online.
However, like many internet celebrities, fans and users have moved on from the "Hawk Tuah Girl," which made New York's decision to have her throw out the opening pitch before its matchup against the Oakland A's more puzzling.
A look back on the effect Grimace had on the New York Mets
It's unlikely that the lovable McDonald's mascot Grimace had any actual effect on the New York Mets turning things around this summer, however, fans will never forget the run the team went on after the purple monster threw an opening pitch.
Ever since Grimace threw out the opening pitch on June 12, New York has posted a 34-21 record, allowing it to climb the standings and get itself back in the playoff picture. Mets fans will hope that the "Hawk Tuah Girl" will have a similar effect on the team and help it clinch a postseason berth.
