Since 2018, Aaron Boone's 38 ejections have led all MLB managers and shown that the Yankees manager is not afraid to make his feelings known. On Sunday, fans got a chance to see the manager's passion on full display once again.
After giving up a go-ahead home run to Juan Soto and intentionally walking Aaron Judge in the seventh inning, Jays reliever Genesis Cabrera examined a ball for his duel with Austin Wells. Upon determining that he did not want to use that particular ball, Cabrera fired it toward the Yankee dugout, where it rolled directly into Aaron Boone.
"Blue Jays pitcher Genesis Cabrera threw a ball he didn't want at Boone in the dugout, so Boone fired it right back at the Jays" - Talkin' Yanks
The New York Yankees manager was not pleased at all by the gesture, and proceeded to hurl the ball back towards the Toronto dugout. Beneath a re-share of the video on Talkin' Yanks, a popular Yankees-themed X account, several fans empathized with Boone.
The Toronto Blue Jays went on to tie the game in the eighth before an RBI single from DJ LeMahieu in the tenth would deliver the win for the New York Yankees. Just their thirteenth win in 27 games since July 1, the Yankees were able to come away with the series win against their divisional foes.
"Boone be fiesty these days. Finally!!!" - supported a fan
"Typical Blue Jays behavior" - accused another onlooker
"The game needs more managers like Boone" - was another reflection
Tensions between the Blue Jays and Yankees, as well as respective coaching staffs, are not new. Last May, Aaron Boone had a tense exchange with Jays pitching coach Pete Walker during a game at Rogers Centre which led to an ejection for the Yankees skipper.
Some comments, however, dissented from Aaron Boone's point of view:
"Boone is 51 going on 12" - quipped one commenter
"What a baby" - insulted a fan
"Boone is such a cry baby" - a final fan jabbed
Aaron Boone seeks to add hustle to his club
Although the umpires subsequently deemed Cabrera's gesture to be unintentional, Boone's reaction was likely meant to keep his team's head in the game. Earlier in the series, Boone benched Gleyber Torres for his lack of hustle.
Now, as the club remains in a neck-and-neck tie with the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East, Aaron Boone wants to ensure that no plays are taken for granted. Boone's team will start a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels after making it three consecutive series wins.
