St. Louis Cardinals' third baseman Nolan Arenado prefers the Boston Red Sox amid continuing trade talks, insider Chris Cotillo reports.
The report comes on the heels of Arenado publicly vetoing a trade to the Houston Astros earlier this offseason. Meanwhile, fans took to social media to express their thoughts on the latest twist in the Nolan Arenado saga.
Here’s a look at what these fans had to say:
“Did the Dodgers say no?” One fan posted.
“Nobody wants him,” another fan chimed in.
“He must realize the Dodgers aren’t an option," this fan weighed in.
However, not all comments poked fun at Arenado’s desire to play in Boston. Some fans were genuinely supportive of him playing for the Boston Red Sox.
Let’s take a look at what these fans had to say:
“He could put up some massive numbers off the green monster! Let’s Arenado! Turn back the clock and give us a monster season!” A fan opined.
“Story x Arenado reunion would feed generations,” another fan commented on X.
“Good thing they have a franchise third baseman,” this fan remarked.
While there is no indication that a Nolan Arenado trade is a done deal, fans should keep an eye on the latest updates. They should look at whether the 33-year-old Gold Glover will be on the move before the start of the 2025 season.
Nolan Arenado's plan B for Red Sox
The Red Sox have been reportedly pursuing free agent third baseman Alex Bregman this offseason. While the Sox have Rafael Devers at third, the club has been seeking to boost its lineup, while adding a Gold Glove-caliber defender at the hot corner.
However, a report on Newsweek from Jan. 5 cites insider Rowan Kavner of FOX Sports suggesting that the Toronto Blue Jays will be swooping in to sign Bregman.
If that’s the case, the Red Sox could then pivot to a Nolan Arenado trade as plan B in their pursuit for more pop in the lineup.
While adding Arenado may not be the Red Sox’s first choice, it’s a deal the team likely has to make. The New York Yankees have successfully restocked their team despite losing Juan Soto.
The Baltimore Orioles look solid, while the Blue Jays are desperately pursuing every big-name free agent in the market. As such, the Red Sox, despite adding Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, are likely a couple of pieces away from building a true contender this season.
It remains to be seen if Boston can land Bregman after all. Otherwise, an Arenado trade could be in the works as soon as Bregman inks a deal somewhere.
