Didi Gregorius shone with the bat as he scored the first runs for the Netherlands in the first game of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Wednesday. Team Netherlands took on Team Cuba at the Taichung Stadium in Taiwan. The game ended 4-2 in favour of the Dutch.
Didi Greogorious has been in the MLB for the last 10 seasons. After brief stints at the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Gregorius was chosen as the successor to the Derek Jeter as the primary shortstop for the New York Yankees. After moving on from the Yankees, Didi made his way into the Philadelphia Phillies roster.
The 33-year-old was born in Amsterdam before his parents chose to move to Curacao, which is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He has therefore represented the Dutch in the World Baseball Classic, and has played for them in previous editions.

During their match against Cuba, Didi hit an RBI single left of center field which was also the first run for the Netherlands. Fans reacted to Gregorius' hit by showing their elation on Twitter.
Didi Gregorius made way for Xander Bogaerts as shortstop
Didi Gregorius, who has been the primary shortstop for the Dutch baseball team in the previous editions of the World Baseball Classic has again made way for Xander Bogaerts. The 30-year-old Bogaerts is one of the best shortstops in the MLB and took his primary position like he had in 2017. Didi was seen playing at first base.
"We have some excellent position players with much MLB experience. We have a lot of young pitchers. They lack experience but are eager to learn from MLB players. We would need to score some runs," Bogaerts had said before the first game of the WBC.
It will interesting to find out how the Netherlands team fairs against the likes of Panama, Italy and the home team Taiwan who they face next in the competition.
