The Los Angeles Dodgers are honoring All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman's son Max before their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. The team will wear '#MaxStrong' shirts to show support for the 3-year-old.
Freddie Freeman's son was released from the hospital on Sunday, per Freddie's wife Chelsea. Max was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, last month.
Freeman has been out of action since late July after he left the team to join his family during his son's medical emergency. He missed the last eight games for the Dodgers with his son in intensive care after Chelsea revealed that Max was paralyzed.
However, after more than a week in the hospital, Max has seemingly made a full recovery and returned home on Sunday. Dodgers are celebrating the fight the 3-year-old showed against the disease that attacks nerves.
Freddie Freeman shared his emotions after Max's release from hospital
Chelsea Freeman shared the news of Max's release from the hospital on Sunday. She thanked the medical team who helped take care of their son. However, she also stated that their 3-year-old still needs time to regain his strength and will need time to learn to walk again after the paralysis attack.
"After 8 long days in the Pediatric ICU we are officially HOME! Max still has a long road ahead of him to regain his strength and relearn how to walk. But we are so thankful to have our family back together. Thank you God for this miracle. Also, thank you to our incredible team of doctors and angel nurses for taking such good care of our boy. And to our village for helping so much with Charlie and Brandon."
An emotional Freddie Freeman addressed the situation his family went through during his youngest son's hospitalization.
“It's a good thing I'm here because it means things are trending better.... No one should have to go through this, especially a 3-year-old. I don’t know how many times Chelsea and I said we wish we could switch.”
Meanwhile, Freddie Freeman is expected to be in the lineup to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. It will be his first game for the Dodgers since July 26.
