The Chicago Cubs' disappointing 2024 regular season concluded with a 3-0 shutout loss against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. However, Cubs fans had something to cheer for thanks to Ian Happ's gesture.
The two-time Gold Glove winner threw a baseball with $100 bills attached to it toward the fans seated in the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field. A fan shared a picture of the ball, which had a message from the All-Star outfielder.
"Thanks for the support all season! Beers for the left field crew on me!" Happ wrote on the ball.
Baseball fans gathered to applaud Ian Happ's gesture.
"He does this every year, dude is a legend," wrote a fan.
"Happ a good dude," wrote another fan.
"Amazing! What a cool gesture," chimed in another fan.
"Man, Happ gets it! He just made life long fans. What a classy move," applauded a fan.
A few fans made sarcastic comments about Happ's gesture.
"Secretly showing you he has money," jibed a fan.
"$300 bucks will buy what, 25 beers at Wrigley?" mocked another.
"So nice of him to buy the left field fans 6 beers."
Chicago Cubs' barren postseason run continues after another disappointing end to the regular season
Ian Happ's gesture, while widely appreciated, won't be enough to satisfy the fans as the Cubs continued their run of not qualifying for the postseason since the 2020 season.
Despite the team's hot and cold performances throughout the season, the fans were always supportive, reflected by the average attendance of 35,949 at home, the sixth highest in the league this season.
The Cubs finished with an 83-79 record, missing out on the hotly-contested final NL Wild Card spot. Their regular season ended on a disappointing note as they fell to a 3-0 shutout loss against the Reds after winning the first two games of the three-game series.
