Jon Singleton produced an entertaining moment when the Houston Astros took on the Arizona Diamondbacks at Minute Maid Park on Friday night.
However, it's one he definitely didn't wish to happen. Singleton was forced out at home plate on a relay throw by the Diamondbacks defense, which, unfortunately, for the first baseman, somewhat comically highlighted his lack of speed on the basepaths.
The D-backs tweeted a video clip of the play:
On Friday, the Astros were playing at home against the Diamondbacks in the first encounter of a three-game set between the teams. The score was tied at 0-0 when Jon Singleton led off for the home team in the bottom of the second inning and got a single off to right to get on first base.
Ben Gamel stepped up to the plate next for the Astros and struck a hard line drive on a 2-1 pitch from D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt to deep right-centerfield. Outfielder Corbin Carroll grabbed the ball just before it reached the fence, while Jon Singleton was signaled by the third base coach to run for home plate.
Even though the Astros slugger tried his best, he just couldn't produce the speed needed to score from first base. Ultimately, Jon Singleton was caught well short of his target following an excellent relay throw by the D-backs shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.
MLB fans just could not help from having some fun on social media at the expense of Singleton, who did his utmost to hustle towards home plate despite his obvious lack of pace.
"Dude took years to round third," remarked one fan.
"Do you not have treadmills in the clubhouse?" One fan jokingly asked.
"What did Singleton think was gonna happen?" asked another fan.
The comments continued to pour in from fans on the attempt from Singleton to score a run from first to third.
"Textbook slow runner," one fan said.
"Imagine hoofing it from first just to be thrown out like that," another fan wrote.
"3rd base coach should be fired on the spot," posted another fan.
Neverthless, the baserunning gaffe didn't prove costly for the Astros, as they went on to seal a commanding 8-0 win over the Diamondbacks.
Jon Singleton enjoying his best season in the majors
Jon Singleton was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 and was the second highest-rated prospect of the franchise at one time.
He got traded to the Houston Astros a couple of years later before making his big league debut with the team in 2014. Singleton was eventually sent down to the minors before receiving a 100-game suspension for a failed drug test in 2018.
In 2021, Singleton signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers and earned his way to the major league roster last year, although he was released midway through the season. He then penned a deal with the Houston Astros until the end of the season before the team offered him a one-year extension for 2024.
It proved to be a smart ploy, as Jon Singleton has played more games than they expected after Jose Abreu was DFA'd following a disastrous start to the campaign.
Singleton has been a decent replacement for the former MVP and is enjoying the best year of his major league career. The 32-year-old has batted .230/.318/.379 with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs this season.
