Baserunning errors have been a recurring theme for the New York Yankees this year, and Jose Trevino became their latest victim in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night. The Yankees catcher made an ill-advised stolen base attempt, which saw him get caught up in an embarrassing rundown before he was eventually tagged out.
MLB fans roasted the Bronx Bombers on social media for yet another baserunning gaffe:
The incident occurred in the top of the second inning when the Yankees were up by a run against the home team with one out on the board. Gleyber Torres was in the batter's box, while Jose Trevino was standing on first with Alex Verdugo on third base. The Guardians were subsequently hunting for a routine double play to end the inning, as the visitors looked to eliminate that option by stealing second base.
On a 1-0 count, the Yankees decided to send Jose Trevino on to second base, even though he is one of the slowest runners on the team, against left-hander Matthew Boyd. The Guardians pitcher read the move and threw the ball to first base, which had Trevino trapped in a rundown. After a couple of relays between the infielders, Boyd himself tagged out the runner at first base and ended the play.
Some fans offered their thoughts on the poor stolen base attempt from the Yankees on Reddit:
"They are literally the dumbest team I have ever seen on the basepaths, how the f**k is this team so close to a World Series," one fan remarked.
"Trevino has a lower sprint speed than Giancarlo Stanton, dude why are you even leaning off of the base," one fan said.
"At this point it’s a coaching issue," posted another fan.
The negative comments continued to flow on social media:
"That's what they do, run the bases like drunks!" one fan added.
"That's just strategy right there. Good luck guessing what we're doing on the basepaths when we don't even know what the f**k we're doing on the basepaths," another fan fumed.
"We got to play the Comedy Central," a fan sarcastically said.
In the immediate aftermath of Trevino's baserunning mistake, Gleyber Torres hit a line drive straight to Guardians' left fielder Steven Kwan, as the Yankees ended the inning without adding any more runs.
Jose Trevino returns to Yankees lineup
Although Jose Trevino was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons with the failed stolen base attempt, he had earned some applause from the Yankees faithful just before it. He drove Juan Soto home during his first at-bat with a single to right field, which gave his team the initial lead.
Despite starting the season as the main catcher, Trevino had dropped down the pecking order in favor of the rookie Austin Wells towards the end of the regular season. However, Wells has struggled in the playoffs so far, and Trevino was promoted back into the lineup in his place on Thursday. Despite the baserunning error, Trevino may have done enough to stay in the lineup for the rest of the series.
The Cleveland Guardians took Game 3 by a 7-5 final score line, cutting the New York Yankees' lead in the series to 2-1. Game 4 of the ALCS will take place once again at Progressive Field on Friday.
