The New York Mets have one of the best closers in the game in Edwin Diaz. When the trumpets start ringing in Citi Field, it usually means it's time to witness something special on the mound in Queens.
New York started a three-game series against the struggling Miami Marlins on Friday night at Loan Depot Park. While Miami took the first game 8-0, it was necessary that the Mets won game 2 to level the series and eye a series win on Sunday afternoon.
However, everything didn't go as planned as they would have wanted to. Edwin Diaz let the game slip away from his grasp and was considerably emotional in the clubhouse after the game.
Fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to sympathize with the 30-year-old Puerto Rican, who has struggled at the mound since making a full recovery from a 2023 season-ending injury to his right knee.
"Feel bad for the dude, he is genuine and loves being a Met," one fan commented
"That breaks my heart. He better get a standing ovation next home stand to let him know we stand with him. That's just too sad," another fan commented
Game 2 should have been an easy win for the Mets, as they led 9-5 through nine innings.
New York gave the ball to Edwin Diaz to close out the game and level the NL East series, but he ended up giving up four runs on four hits as the Marlins tied the game only to walk it off in the tenth.
Despite losing the contest in extra innings, Mets fans are still not ready to give up on their ace Edwin Diaz just yet. Many have vouched for the star to make a comeback from this momentary slump.
"He’s too good of a pitcher not to find it again, he’ll be fine," one fan commented
"I’m sure he’ll find it again. Dudes just coming off of a major injury," another fan commented
"The Edwin Diaz comeback arc is going to be a movie," yet another fan commented
NY Mets and the Miami Marlins ended their three-game series at Loan Depot Park on Sunday afternoon, as New York avoided a series sweep by winning the contest 7-3.
Edwin Diaz has registered five saves this season with the Mets
Edwin Diaz has managed only five saves this season for the NY Mets, with an ERA of 5.50, just 27 Ks, and 1.22 WHIP in nine save situations. He has blown four save opportunities and has looked nothing like his best from the 2022 season in 2024.
New York will hope that Diaz makes a turnaround to be his best self again and start to pile on the saves for the ballclub in the 2024 MLB season..
