While it may be a matter of months before MLB fans can witness any more home runs, the league is doing what it can to foster interest during the offseason. As was recently evidenced, even stated facts can cause some fans to get their backs up.
On Thursday, MLB took to X to share a list of the active players with the most home runs. Although there was nothing subjective about the list, fans were all too happy to chime in with their opinions.
"Here are the active MLB home run leaders. Who on this list will finish with the most?" - MLB
One of the first things fans noticed was the exclusion of New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge from the list. Since making his debut in 2016, Judge has hit 315 home runs - helped by his 62 homers in 2022 - which is enough to rank 11th on the list. Several fans were vexed not to see the Yankees' captain's name.
Mike Trout's name on the list also sparked reactions from fans. A three-time MVP, the Los Angeles Angels star has only competed in 111 of a possible 324 games over the past two seasons. A torn meniscus closed the book on the star's 2024 season, and left many fans wondering if one of MLB's top talents will ever return to his vintage form.
"Should be Trout if he can avoid injuries" - offered a fan
"Trout pre injuries had 600 potential but now probably won’t even get to 500" - observed another
"The artist formerly known as, Mike" - laughed a fan
Another topical name who was included in the list was Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman. A 20-home run hitter in 11 of his 15 seasons, Freeman was recently awarded the World Series MVP Award for his 4 homers and 12 RBIs in the five-game Fall Classic.
"Freddie Freeman hit 341 of them in the World Series" - stated a fan
"Freddie is the man" - came final words of support
A cohort of MLB greatness is getting older
Of the players on the list, most are over 35 years of age, meaning that retirement from league service is not on the distant horizon. Although each player has treated some fans to some excellent moments, a changing of the guard is underway.
Perhaps, some of the names on this list will remain on it, or perhaps the next few seasons will cede the path for a completely different assortment of names.
