After the 2024 season came to a close, New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso became a free agent. The four-time All-Star is looking for a big-time contract after six seasons in the Big Apple.
Alonso and his agent Scott Boras are reportedly searching for a deal upward of $200 million. While that is quite the number, Alonso is one of the best first basemen in the league.
During his six seasons in New York, Alonso has been a feared hitter. He has played in 848 games and hit .249/.339/.514 with 226 home runs and 586 runs batted in.
MLB insiders react to Pete Alonso's contract spat with the Mets
Jon Heyman weighs in
According to The New York Post's Jon Heyman, there is quite a gap between what the Mets offered and what Alonso is looking for. However, that does not mean the two sides cannot get a deal done.
If the two sides cannot agree here soon, the club has backups in mind. Heyman mentions they could give Mark Vientos a shot at first base if Alonso signs elsewhere.
Mark Feinsand weighs in
Mark Feinsand is another MLB insider who has been covering Pete Alonso and his free-agency period this winter. While he also sees the gap in what The Amazins previously offered Alonso, he does not see the slugger going anywhere.
"Everybody that I've spoken to, executives around the league, agents, etc. they all think Alonso is going to wind up back with the Mets. I think that's where he's probably headed. The question is, what does the deal look like?" said Feinsand.
For Feinsand, everything points to Alonso re-signing with the club he has spent his entire career with. The only question that stands in the way is for how much and how many years?
