It was a perfect day for Gerrit Cole and his New York Yankees teammates who beat the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday to clinch the AL East division. After dropping the first two games of the series against their divisional foes, the Yankees were faced with their worst fears with playoff seeding on the line.
However, cometh the hour, cometh the man. With Cole on the mound, the Yankees cruised to a swift victory. In a dominating 10-1 win, the starting pitcher played his part, throwing 6.2 scoreless innings before exiting the game in the seventh. As he exited, fans at the Yankee Stadium rose to their feet for a standing ovation.
Cole's wife Amy reshared a post showing the standing ovation for the pitcher. She also posted snaps from her time in the stadium and, of course, of the celebration.
Gerrit Cole's dominance couldn't have come at a better time
While it might not have been the perfect year for Gerrit Cole, thanks to injuries, his performances just ahead of the postseason should raise hope among Yankees fans who have been waiting for the World Series to return to the Bronx since 2009.
After the game, Cole was ecstatic, knowing he got the job done.
"It was a special night,” he said after the game. “This is what you want as a player. The division is right there for the taking. You've got to go out there and get it."
On the night, Cole only walked once and struck out five hitters. This will add to his season stat line of 8-5 for a 3.41 ERA across 17 starts and 95.0 innings.
"He's answered the bell and I think shown himself to be such a big-game guy and he was excellent tonight," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "I really feel like he's been throwing the ball pretty well now for maybe over a month."
Now all that remains to be seen is whether Gerrit Cole continues to throw well to take the Yankees to the destined land.
