Former Yankees infielder, Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers earlier this week. The 28-year-old Venezuelan played seven years in the Bronx and won the AL pennant with the Yankees in 2024.
Despite failing to win the World Series with the Bronx Bombers, Torres had a successful season wherein he excelled in both departments of the game. Capping off his time with the Yankees and looking towards brighter horizons, Gleyber Torres took to social media to pen a heartfelt note.
The caption on his post read:
"Grateful for the opportunities. New beginnings ahead, Stepping into a new era with excitement and purpose. Let’s Go Tigers"
Speaking about his decision to sign with the Tigers in an interview with MLB Network, Torres said:
"On this process, I just try to find the right place to play one year and I got a few opportunities with other teams. But I am just looking for as a young team, specially Detroit, the group it looks like really tight, like family and how they play on the second half of the season. It was really impressive.
"I have really good conversation with Scott, AJ, and J Cora, and you know all the details, all the little things that they show me. I feel really happy and also they told me I was going to play at second base.
Torres also looked back fondly on his time with the Yankees, saying:
"You know I feel proud of myself for being with the Yankees for seven years but now I am just with Detroit, I'm just really happy. I am looking forward to do my best for the team."
Gleyber Torres registered decent offensive numbers with the Yankees in 2024. He finished the regular season with a .257 batting average, 15 home runs, 63 RBIs and .709 OPS.
Tigers President of Baseball Operations spoke highly of Gleyber Torres
Tigers President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris spoke highly about Gleyber Torres' offensive numbers with the Yankees over the years, and was happy to add a talented player to their 2025 MLB roster.
Harris said:
“We think he’s going to add on-base skills. We think he’s going to add damage, and we think he’s going to be able to protect some of our young but really talented left-handed hitters who will hit in the middle of our lineup in 2025.”
The new challenge will be an exciting one for both Torres and the ballclub as Detroit aims to go beyond the ALDS next season.
