The Milwaukee Brewers have taken everyone by surprise yet again by securing their third NL Central title in the last four years, and manager Pat Murphy couldn't be more proud of his team. The Brewers were shorthanded this season, with their best players either traded or placed on the injured list.
Murphy was quite aware of the fact that the Brewers were somewhat of an underdog this season, as they dealt star pitcher Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles. They also lost another key pitcher in Devin Williams to a back injury.
Still, Murphy acknowledges the feat achieved by the rest of the players and how they defied many expectations this year (via MLB Network):
"You can say what you want about me getting the job or whatever it is, but the players are the ones that play the game. And I'm just so happy to have that group of guys that nobody believed in. Guys couldn't see us winning," Murphy said.
"They trade Corbin Burnes and your number one gets hurt. You can't see us winning. You know, Devin's out until August. You know, a lot of people doubted, but these guys didn't. You know, 13 of our 26 on the opening day roster had never had opening day in the big leagues," he added.
Pat Murphy also credited the front office for providing enough depth to the roster this season.
Christian Yelich was a great support for the Milwaukee Brewers despite injury
Brewers star Christian Yelich landed on the injury list in July due to his persisting back injury dating back to his stint at the Miami Marlins. He eventually decided to undergo season-ending surgery in August.
Still, he never turned his back on the team. He had a strong belief that this team held a lot of potential with him or without him. This was evident through statements during spring training when there was skepticism about the Brewers (via AP News):
"Even when we’ve been good these last few years, no one ever picks us to be good just because we’re the Brewers,” Yelich said at the time “It is what it is. But I think we have a chance to really surprise some people with the talent in this room."
Not only that, third baseman Joey Ortiz also talked about how much of a great help it was to have players like Christian Yelich supervising them throughout the season:
"You look at the names of the guys in this locker room,” Ortiz said. “We’ve got Christian Yelich, Willy Adames, [William] Contreras, Rhys Hoskins — great leaders on this team making sure we’re locked in every single day," he added.
Milwaukee followed the 'all hands on deck' approach under the leadership of Pat Murphy, and they've been able to achieve the incredible feat of claiming the division title once again.
