Luis Severino’s New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 9-7 in the first game of their Subway Series on Tuesday. However, the two-time All-Star didn’t pitch during the game and is not scheduled to do so in the next game either.
After spending the first nine seasons of his major league career with the Bronx Bombers, Severino relocated to Queens. The 30-year-old inked a one-year, $13 million contract with the Mets in December 2023.
When both New York teams faced each other, Severino garnered attention for having been a part of both teams. When he was approached by reporters and asked about the difference between being a Yankee and a Mets player, Severino said:
"Having a beard. Getting here getting to know everybody. [Being with the Mets] is definitely a little bit more calm."
"You come here and nobody is expecting us to win this year. That is a little bit less pressure on us. It's just about coming here and winning games and at the end of the year we will see what happens," he added.
Luis Severino highlighted that there is less pressure on the New York Mets compared to the New York Yankees.
With the Yankees, there were high expectations every season, while fans don't expect as much from the current Mets team.
Luis Severino discusses emotional connection with Yankees
Since joining the Mets, Severino has seen improvement in his stats, achieving a 5-2 record with a 3.29 ERA in 15 starts so far this season. Last season with the Yankees, he had a 4-8 record and a 6.65 ERA in 19 starts.
Discussing about his time with the Yankees, Severino said:
“I gave everything that I got to the Yankees. At the end there is no hard feelings, I love the Yankees. I love the guys out there, and I'm here because they gave me an opportunity to be somebody. You know, I went out there and gave my 100 percent.”
The New York Yankees (52-29) currently lead the AL East while the New York Mets (38-39) rank third in the NL East. The final game of their Subway Series is set for Wednesday at Citi Field.
