Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. has had arm issues in the past, and may be hitting him again. It's being reported that McCullers Jr. has been temporarily shut down from throwing.
He only made eight starts last season for the Astros. He was dealing with a strained flexor tendon last season. While there are no specifics to his injury other than being "sore," one has to think his tendon never fully healed.
It's early enough into the season that this could turn out to be nothing. However, McCullers' injury track record hasn't given fans a lot of hope going forward.
Houston Astros fans are already thinking the worst. They're preparing to be without McCullers Jr. for a good part of the season, similar to last year.
"See u in July Lance," one fan tweeted.
"Me thinks we're near the end of the line," another fan explained.
This wouldn't be the year to be without Lance McCullers Jr. The team has high expectations for him this season. They are looking to make him a top guy in that starting rotation this season with Justin Verlander's departure to the New York Mets.
McCullers Jr. signed a five-year, $85 million contract extension in 2021 after missing the entirety of the 2020 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Hopefully this is something minor and not something that could be detrimental to his season.
It would not be the end of the world if the Houston Astros lost Lance McCullers Jr. for some time
The team is full of workhorse starting pitchers. This season, they'll be led by Framber Valdez. Last season, Valdez broke the MLB record for most consecutive quality starts with 25. He's somebody who the Houston Astros know they'll get a good start out of.
Follow Valdez up with Cristian Javier, who signed a five-year, $64 million contract with the team last week. Javier went 11-9 last season with a 2.54 ERA. The Astros' starting rotation got so crowded that he saw some time in the bullpen last year as well.
Finally, the team is excited to get a full season from Hunter Brown. Brown is their number-one prospect heading into the new season. He'll round out the starting rotation.
Even if McCullers Jr. has to miss time, the team is stacked with talented pitchers. They'll be able to hold it down if worst comes to worst.
