Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez was slated to play for Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, but that is no longer a certainty. He has maintained that he wants to play in the international tournament, but is not sure if his health will allow it. This year will be the biggest season of his career, and he needs to be fully prepared for it.

Many players have dropped out of the World Baseball Classic as the tournament approaches. Whether it is due to loyalty to their MLB team or injury concerns, they will have to decide soon. All the teams participating will have to finalize their rosters soon, laying all these uncertainties to rest.

Hector Gomez shared the comments from Valdez on Twitter.

"I would like to play in the 2023 WBC, but I pitched a lot of innings last season. I'm not ready, I have to rest my shoulder. I'll talk to my psychologist to see what decision I'll make."

This will be Framber Valdez's first season as the true No. 1 pitcher for the Houston Astros. With Justin Verlander's departure to the New York Mets, Valdez is the team's ace.

In 2022, he proved that he is more than ready to take up that mantle. He pitched for an ERA of 2.82 and received his first All-Star selection. He was also instrumental in the team's World Series run.

Pitching has never been more valuable in the MLB than it is right now. Valdez is due for a contract extension soon, so it makes sense that he doesn't want to risk his health.

As the top pitcher on one of the best teams in baseball, Framber Valdez will likely get a huge contract. The Houston Astros and their fans would prefer it if Valdez didn't risk his regular-season availability for the World Baseball Classic.

The workload increased in 2022 for Framber Valdez and will increase even further in 2023. His development and growth will be critical to the Astros' success. Considering his importance to the team, it would not be surprising if the Houston Astros hope he doesn't play in the World Baseball Classic.

The Astros will need Valdez by Opening Day, which might mean he needs to miss the World Baseball Classic.

Anything less than a championship will be a disappointment for the Astros and their fans. It is a tough bar to clear but speaks to how well their team is built for future success.

The loss of Justin Verlander would be impossible to overcome for many teams, but the Astros and Framber Valdez seem more than capable.
