Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper was one of the key cogs of a resilient team that reached the World Series in 2022 before losing to the Houston Astros. Harper's performance was exemplary as he bagged the Most Valuable Player award in the National League Championship Series.
Harper braved through a UCL tear in his elbow, sustained in May. This forced him to take the field only as a DH for the rest of the season. He underwent Tommy John surgery in November. As a result, he will be missing the World Baseball Classic 2023 as well as the beginning of the 2023 season.
His wife, Kayla Varner, has been by his side throughout the highs and lows of his professional baseball career. Kayla Varner turned 30 last November while Bryce Harper celebrated his 30th birthday a month prior, in October 2022. The couple have been together since their high school days back in Nevada.
Kayla played soccer in high school, which she continued till her graduation from Ohio State University in 2015. By then, Harper had already established himself as one of the brightest prospects in MLB, playing for the Washington Nationals.
Harper finally popped the question, after years of long-distance relationship, in 2014. However, they broke up their engagement in 2015. The couple got together later that year and in 2016, Kayla announced their (re-)engagement on Instagram:
"ESPYS last night with my love. So proud of you, B! Oh and WERE ENGAGED... Again 💍✨ #TheSequel,"
They married in an intimate ceremony in December 2016. They have two children, Krew Aron and Brooklyn Elizabeth.
"Our wedding day was a dream ✨We are so lucky to have such amazing family and friends who came to support us."
Bryce Harper's 2022 season
Bryce Harper led from the front, fighting through injuries, as the Philadelphia Phillies won the MLB National League Championship Series and made their way into the World Series. Harper notched up 18 home runs and 65 RBIs in the regular season, but he saved his best for the postseason, where he posted six home runs and 13 RBIs with a batting average of .349.
Phillies fans will be hoping he will be even more dangerous when he returns to the field fully fit next season.
