The Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde addressed the brawl that broke out during the Orioles-Yankees game at Camden Yards. The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles have been going toe-to-toe against each other in the race to the playoffs.
The competition heat was evident on the field during the series opener this Friday night. The Yankees ended up winning the series opener with a 4-1 score, which is their first since June 18th. However, in the ninth inning, both teams had emptied their dugouts and faced each other on the field.
"You know, I'm just walking back and I heard stuff from their dugout, so I just reacted the way I did," Hyde said to the media.
It happened when Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes unintentionally hit outfielder Heston Kjerstad with a 96.8-mph sinker. After this, Brandon Hyde was seen tossing his helmet on the ground and shouting at the Yankees dugout. Chaos ensued and the benches were cleared.
"And I saw what they were pointing at me and the whole thing," Hyde added. "So, just reacted the way I did."
Brandon Hyde talks about the current condition of Heston Kjerstad
Right after Heston Kjerstad was hit in the head, he couldn't stand up for a while before walking out to the first base line. He was checked by the athletic trainer, Brian Ebel and was pulled out of the game.
In the post-game conference, Hyde came out and gave an update on Kjerstad's condition.
"Well, he's getting tested right now. He's going through some tests and, you know, hopefully he's okay," Hyde stated.
Brandon Hyde also talked about how critical the impact was for rookie player Kjerstad, and how he hopes for the best for him.
"Yeah, I know, it's, I mean, never, you know, it is scary. You know, it's pretty much in the ear. So, we're, you know, you never want to see anybody get hit. Especially up in the, you know, above the neck. So, we're hoping for the best," Hyde remarked.
The Baltimore Orioles faced their fourth straight loss and are currently just one game away from tying up their position with the Yankees on the leaderboard. The next two games of the series would decide the next American League East lead.
