It's been a disappointing offseason, to say the least, so far for the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans. The club is not only coming off a rough 2024 campaign, which saw the Jays finish last in the American League East, but they have also struggled to land any notable free agents this offseason.
The Blue Jays have been linked to nearly every high-profile free agent this offseason, including Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes. However, they have missed out on all of them. The offseason struggles have left some fans wondering what the team is planning for the 2025 season.
Even though the team's fanbase is uneasy, one fan has not lost his passion for the team: NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. During a post-game press conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder guard was asked about his MLB All-Star Game jacket and whether he was a baseball fan. The Toronto native was quick to shout out his hometown club.
"I love baseball, go Blue Jays," Gilgeous-Alexander said when asked about whether or not he liked baseball.
Gilgeous-Alexander, who was born in Toronto, has developed into one of the top players in the NBA with the OKC. Even as he continues his rise to potential NBA MVP, Gilgeous-Alexander has not forgotten where he is from, even while the Blue Jays are in a disappointing offseason funk.
Gilgeous-Alexander has continued to represent his Canadian roots throughout his career, playing for Team Canada in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Given how much he means to the entire country, it might not be long before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be tossing out a ceremonial opening pitch before a Blue Jays game.
The Thunder superstar is not the only famous Jays fan, as stars such as Drake, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain and WWE legend Bret Hart have all shared their love for the team.
Toronto Blue Jays enter the 2025 season with a level of uncertainty around their top stars
Regardless of which celebrities support the team, the front office needs to take care of some important business regarding the team's current makeup. Both Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. could become unrestricted free agents at the end of the 2025 season, which could have a dramatic impact on the franchise.
Both players have been linked in trade rumors, as well as potentially signing massive contract extensions or new deals in free agency. Toronto will need to sort out its current state of affairs if it wants to keep gaining more fans while also retaining its celebrity supporters like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
