Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler struggled to make a noticeable contribution on his return from the injured list on Wednesday as the Dodgers faced a 5-4 loss against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
Even though Walker Buehler delivered an impressive double play getting him out of the bases-loaded situation, it still wasn't enough for him to lead his team to the victory. Buehler threw only five strikes in his first 17 pitches.
Despite all of this, he believes that he's closer to being in his best form than he's ever been in the past. Speaking with Spectrum Sportsnet, the right-hander is optimistic about his future.
"Yeah, I mean, I feel closer than I did a couple months ago. But, you know, as I've said at the end of the day, like there's a standard of performing here. And I'm very aware of where I'm kind of at in that standard. So, you know, keep plugging away," Buehler said.
Walker Buehler was back on the mound for the Dodgers after eight weeks of recovery from his hip injury, and he could only last 3 1/3 innings where he struggled to get any help from the home plate umpire or even his defense. He gave away the three-run head start at the beginning of the game.
"And wish isn't the right word or hope. But, you know, keep hopefully doing the right things. And it will come together," he added.
Dave Roberts gives his two cents on Walker Buehler's performance
Before starting against the Brewers this Wednesday, Walker Buehler pitched last on June 19 after which he landed on the injured list with hip inflammation. The Dodgers had a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and Buehler took the mound in the bottom first and walked three hitters back-to-back.
However, in his next 17 pitches, Buehler threw 12 pitches without a single strikeout. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talked about his performance, and how there was a lack of inconsistency.
"Just from the eye test, he was out of sync tonight,” Roberts said. “I think his throw was inconsistent, and obviously the delivery was inconsistent. He didn’t get ‘Strike one’ very often tonight. He was working behind hitters, and then you’re trying to find your way back into counts. It’s hard to live like that."
Walker Buehler exited the field with four runs on three hits, and four walks while striking out three and one homer.
