The New York Mets had a tough 2024 season start, losing their first five games. Despite the initial struggles, the franchise successfully bounced back and is currently going 10-8.
Mets new manager Carlos Mendoza made a big contribution to the club's comeback. The skipper didn’t lose faith despite consecutive losses, keeping his cool and communicating with each player.
Mendoza didn’t call a team meeting but addressed each player individually and his approach paid off. The Mets won three series in a row and got their record back to .500.
The New York Mets' performance has led many to believe, they could be potential contenders for the championship and Jon Heyman of the NY Post is on board on that call.
“I think they're a contender. That’s what David Stearns said at the beginning of the year, in spring training and I think he is, absolutely right about that. I think they are contender and I think they’ll be, you know, if not at 500 a little bit above 500… I’m impressed by manager Carlos Mendoza, has been outstanding so far, excellent communicator.”
The Mets’ most recent win was on Wednesday, when they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates with a solid 9-1 beatdown.
Talking about the team’s early stumble and comeback, Carlos Mendoza said (via New York Post):
“Every team goes through stretches where it’s gonna be hard and out of the gate, we were dealing with some adversity… You have to stay consistent, make sure you prepare and go out and compete. It’s good to see the guys bouncing back quickly.”
Mets president David Stearns satisfied with team manager Carlos Mendoza
The New York Mets’ president of baseball operations, David Stearns is quite satisfied with the job Carlos Mendoza has done so far with the team.
“I think he’s been very steady from Day 1 of spring training through today. And that’s so important over the course of the major league season,” Stearns said talking about Mendoza (via New York Post). “Understanding that it is a long season, and there are going to be times where it’s tough. I think he’s done a great job of doing that.”
In November 2023, Carlos Mendoza was appointed as the manager of the New York Mets by signing a three-year contract with a club option in the fourth year.
