All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman is yet to be signed while other free-agent infielders continue to get inked. The latest is the signing of former Yankees star Gleyber Torres who signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.
This signing potentially takes out another team from Bregman's sweepstakes as with each day passing by, the infielder market is getting short for Bregman and even first baseman Pete Alonso. Both of them are represented by Scott Boras, who has helped other free agents like Juan Soto and Blake Snell secure big-money deals in the offseason.
Expressing his views on Talking Baseball, former MLB star Trevor Plouffe shared enthusiasm for the Torres acquisition but voiced concern about its potential impact on Detroit's pursuit of Alex Bregman.
"I like the move. The only reason I say I don’t love the move is because I’m hoping it doesn’t take them out of the Alex Bregman race. I want them to go sign Bregman," Plouffe said (20:46 onwards).
"They have a lot of moving pieces. The reason I say it might take them out of the Bregman race is that they just have a lot of infielders now. Jace Jung is there, like I said, Colt Keith, Trey Sweeney, Torkelson, and now Gleyber. They have a lot of options there. I don’t know if that means bringing in Bregman, trading some of those guys, or figuring it all out. Depth is always a good thing. But I like it. I will not like it if it takes them out of the Bregman race."
MLB analyst reports Tigers going all-in to sign Alex Bregman
While the latest signing of Gleyber Torres comes as a surprise, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, AL Central's Detroit Tigers are fully committed to their pursuit of Alex Bregman.
This comes as no surprise, as Bregman has already played under current manager AJ Hinch during his time with the Houston Astros.
If that were to be the case and if Detroit signs Bregman then they'll need to move rookie Colt Keith from second to first base, have Gleyber Torres play second and reserve third base for Bregman.
It remains to be seen if the Tigers come out winners in Alex Bregman's sweepstakes.
