Ever since the end of the World Series in October, Juan Soto's name has been etched on the minds of fans, pundits and league executives alike. Set to surpass a record when he finally signs the deal to end his free agent, the 25-year-old is the hottest free agent of the year.
Over the past several weeks, Soto has met with a variety of teams, all of whom are salivating at a chance of signing him. On Tuesday, MLB insider Jon Morosi supplied a list of teams who are thought to have come forward with an offer to date.
"Juan Soto has offers from 5 teams, source confirms the report by @RandyJMiller" - Jon Morosi
Predictably, the deep-pocketed Los Angeles Dodgers are on the list. Last offseason, LA committed over $1 billion in offseason spending. The club has been able to do this by employing deferred payments on several of their big-name contracts. Defending World Series champs to boot, many feel as though LA has an unfair advantage in the sweepstakes.
The Toronto Blue Jays have emerged as something of a dark horse in the race to ink Juan Soto. After a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw MLB's only Canadian team finish last in the AL East, GM Ross Atkins is looking to make a splash. Moreover, the Jays purportedly contended for Ohtani until late in his free agency, a ball fans still have not forgiven the front office for dropping.
"So that means Juan Soto is signing with Toronto right" - offered a fan
"Gotta go Toronto, right?" - said another
"And i’m enroute to toronto" - claimed a fan
With speculation abound, the Big Apple is also getting attention from fans. A member of the New York Yankees in 2024 under his one-year deal, Soto has reportedly also drawn offers from the Mets, who tout the largest payroll in MLB.
"I think he’ll stay in NY and be either a Met or a Yankee" - pondered a fan
"Of course he will re-sign with the Yankees!!" - remarked another
"Juan Soto on a plane to LA and then signing with the Mets will be cinema" - was a final thought
Juan Soto will remain MLB's hottest free agent until deal
While nobody knows exactly when Soto will pull the trigger, the decision will send shockwaves through the baseball world. For sure a young player, Soto has played exceedingly well under pressure. However, if the reports are to be believed, the pressure of one of the largest deals in history will soon come down upon his able shoulders.
