Derek Jeter stopped by Art Miami on Tuesday, showing up for the unveiling of a special pop art exhibition in honor of him. The exhibition features twelve screen prints created by famous artist Russell Young, who has also worked on portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Kendrick Lamar. The artwork shows some important moments of the New York Yankees' former shortstop's career.
MLB's official Instagram handle shared a few stories from the event:
The collection includes two of Jeter's iconic moments: His famous jump throw and his first-pitch home run in Game 4 of the 2000 World Series against the New York Mets.
“You can really feel the tension and the concentration. In the swing, look at his eyes, he knows the ball’s gone,” Young said of his artwork. “You can see that energy.” [H/T Miami Herald]
Each piece is finished with Young's "Diamon Dust" technique, a method made famous by the leading figure of the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol, in the 1980s, which gives an added sparkle effect to the artwork. It includes putting sparkling dust on screen prints which the artist jokingly refers to as “Tinkerbell."
The gallery's director Nick Korniloff said of Jeter's visit:
"Who doesn’t love Derek Jeter if you’re a baseball fan, and, more importantly, a person who loves people with great character. It’s wonderful to have Derek here at the show.” [H/T Miami Herald]
Derek Jeter combined sports and art to make a philanthropic impact
Derek Jeter’s collaboration with Young demonstrates connections between sports and art while showing that Jeter is very committed to philanthropy. Since its formation in 1996, Jeter's "Turn 2" foundation has raised more than $40 million for empowerment projects for children globally.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artwork, which was a year and a half in the making, will be donated to the foundation to support youth programs and fight drug abuse. At Art Miami, the pieces are open for sale for one week, starting from Tuesday.
