Some fans might have been surprised to see Freddie Freeman appearing for Team Canada during last night's pivotal Pool C matchup against the United States.
Although the 2022 NL hits leader was kept quiet by the American pitchers, he has been touted as Team Canada's most profile name. So why is Freeman playing for Team Canada?
Despite being born in Fountain Valley, California, both of Freeman's parents come from Ontario, Canada. Fred and Rosemary Freeman settled in southern California shortly before Freddie was born.
When Freddie Freeman was only 10, Rosemary passed away due to melanoma. Freeman, 33, has cited his Canadian-born mother as a reason that he decided to suit up in Canadian colors this spring.

Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2011, Freeman spent the first decade of his career in Atlanta. During that time, the first baseman collected several honors, including a Golden Glove and some Silver Slugger Awards.
After leading the league in runs and doubles during the shortened season of 2020, Freddie Freeman led the Braves to the World Series in 2021. After besting the Houston Astros to win their first World Series title since 1995, Freeman abruptly left the team.
Citing difficulties with Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos, Freeman decided that it was time to shop around. Despite never having appeared for a team other than the Braves, the Los Angeles Dodgers inked a 6-year deal worth $162 million before the 2022 season.
The move turned out to be an excellent transition for Freeman. Hitting alongside outfielder Mookie Betts, Freeman led the NL in runs, hits and doubles in 2022. He even hit his first home run of the 2022 season against his former team at Dodgers Stadium last April.

Freddie Freeman hopes to be a difference maker for Team Canada
Although most Canadians that are present for their country at the World Baseball Classic have some MLB experience, none come close to Freeman.
Canada will have some stiff competition, as was evidenced by their 12-1 loss to the USA on March 13. If the North American nation wants any chance of making it to the next rounds of the tournament, they know who to look to for leadership.
