Jose Trevino of the Yankees is scheduled to go on the ten-day IL

After injuries limited Jose Trevino to just 55 games played last season, the Yankees catcher is on the cusp of putting up a career season. However, it now looks as though the 31-year-old will have to wait some more before shattering his career figures.

Early on July 13, the Yankees announced that Trevino would be hitting the 10-day IL with a left quad strain. Replacing the ailing catcher will be Venezuelan Carlos Narváez, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

"Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves: •Placed C Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain. •Recalled C Carlos Narváez (#94) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre." - New York Yankees

The Texas-born 2-for-4 with an RBI, a pair of doubles and two runs scored in Friday night's 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. However, as Jose Trevino ran to home plate to score off of a Juan Soto single, the catcher showed visible signs of discomfort and was diagnosed with a quad strain shortly thereafter.

Trevino's 2022 season stands up as the best of his career to this point and was also the year that he came to the Bronx from the Texas Rangers. In 2022, Trevino hit .248/.283/.388 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. On account of the performance, he solidified his role as the Yankees' first-string catcher, when he was healthy.

At the time this injury was announced, Jose Trevino was on track to beat his 2022 figures and establish a new career season. In 59 games so far this year catching for the New York Yankees, Trevino has hit .244/.303/.411 with 8 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Jose Trevino remains hopeful for the 2024 season

On account of their 8-18 run over the past month, the Yankees have coughed up the top spot in the AL East to the Orioles. After Friday's game, Trevino showed that he remains optimistic about the season, telling SNY:

“It’s been tough for us a little bit. We have to keep going. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us, If anything, people want to see this. We’re the Yankees. People don’t care. If we win, yeah we should’ve won. If we lose, they like that. We’ll get back to where we were and play with that chip on our shoulder.”

Whatever the outcome, Trevino will need to sit idly by until at least July 23. By then, he hopes, his club will have made up for lost time.
