Lance McCullers Jr., the Houston Astros' starting pitcher, has experienced right arm soreness. As reported by manager Dusty Baker, Lance will miss the entire spring training and possibly the beginning of the new season. After his bullpen session on Tuesday, Lance underwent several MRI exams and was reportedly dealing with a pitching arm strain.
"McCullers had an MRI last night and there's no structural damage to elbow. He said it was a small muscle strain. He hopes to rehab and be able to throw 150 innings this year, but he'll be shut down for a few weeks" - brianmctaggart
Lance McCullers Jr. was stipulated as an integral part of the Astros' starting rotation for the upcoming campaign. The management did not bother to sign a new starting pitcher to the roster after losing their ace pitcher this offseason. Justin Verlander signed a mammoth deal with the Mets, leaving behind a pitching hole for the Astros.
"The Astros, who lost Justin Verlander in free agency, will now lean into their starting pitching depth. Rotation right now is Valdez, Javier, Urquidy, Garcia and rookie Hunter Brown" - brianmctaggart
The Houston Astros have a vested interest in their minor-league prospects, with Hunter Brown being seen as Lance's replacement during spring training. McCullers Jr. was dissatisfied with his latest injury, which will keep him on the injury list and off the roster for the 2023 season.
"I’ve been a little bit upset. I was really looking forward to a great start to the camp and great start to the season. Any time this happens, it’s very frustrating for me and the team and the fanbase" - Lance McCullers Jr. (brianmctaggart)
When will Lance McCullers Jr. be back with the Astros roster?
In eight starts, starting in August 2022, Lance McCullers Jr. was 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA. He was recovering from a right flexor pronator strain sustained in Game 4 of the 2021 ALDS against the Chicago White Sox throughout the majority of the previous year.
McCullers signed a five-year, $85 million contract in March 2021 after missing the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery. That season, he made 28 starts and had a record of 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA.

Initial MRI scans show a muscle strain, and the Astros' management is still unsure how serious the injury is. The baseball club will be able to estimate Lance's comeback on the roster with the help of additional tests and scans.
