New York Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo is having a tough time at first base recently. On Sunday, he made two errors in the field, leading to the 8-7 loss against the Cleveland Guardians.
On Wednesday, he would run into similar problems against the Toronto Blue Jays. With a runner on first and one out, the four-time Gold Glover booted a groundball that might have gotten them out of the inning.
Fortunately, the Yanks would get out of the inning without giving up any runs following the error. Even more fortunately, Rizzo was not charged an error on the play.
The constant troubles at first base have been alarming for the fanbase. They are starting to worry that Rizzo may cost them some games in the future.
"Like Rizzo gotta sit at some point bruh" - one fan posted.
"What's going on with Rizzo" - posted antoher fan.
"DJ makes that play" - posted another.
Some fans call for manager Aaron Boone to give Rizzo a day off or two. They don't want to see him on the field while dealing with this defensive slump.
"Hopefully the drop off isn't from the concussion that went down last season" - said another fan.
"Don't worry - according to Boone we are great defensively" - said another fan.
"Call up Jones I've seen enough" - said another.
Some have seen enough and are ready to move on from Rizzo. This season is too important to keep someone who's struggling out there.
What's going on with Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo?
According to Baseball Reference, Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo has three errors through 18 games. That's quite a lot for somebody who has won four Gold Glove Awards and a Platinum Glove Award.
Late into the season last year, Rizzo suffered a concussion after Fernando Tatis Jr. collided with him. It ended his season, as he dealt with post-concussion syndrome, which he revealed was one of the biggest struggles he has faced.
While he says that he feels much better this year than he did shortly after the injury, it could be what's causing him trouble in the field. This will be something that the front office must keep an eye on if they want to go the distance this season.
