"Luis Gil is my cy young winner" "Never doubted Cardiac Clay" - Yankees fans exhilarated after comeback victory against Angels

Fans reacted as Luis Gil and the New York Yankees triumphed over the LA Angels in a nail-biting 2-1 victory on Wednesday. The game saw the ejection of manager Aaron Boone early in the innings, but Gil still cruised safely, solidifying his status as the best pitcher on the Yankees rotation.

Gil got a chance on the rotation after reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole was sidelined due to an elbow injury just a week away from Opening Day. In his absence, Gil has not only showcased his pitching but also turns out to be a boost on days when the Yankees offense isn't clicking.

The Yankees needed Gil to put up an impressive performance in a low-run affair, and he was dialed in. Gil went deep and pitched 8.0 innings for two hits, one earned run and nine strikeouts.

Following his performance, he has been acclaimed as a Cy Young contender by fans.

"Gil making a case for ROY, MVP, Cy Young. Not saying it's gonna happen, but he keeps pitching like this.......gonna be fun," one fan posted.
"Never doubted Cardiac Clay! Luis Gil is my cy young winner," another added.
"Would have liked Luis Gil to pitch the complete game, but great win Yanks!" wrote another.

Another pitcher who got his due from fans was Clay Holmes, who has been baseball's best closer this season. He held on in the ninth despite things getting interested at one time.

"Thank you for letting us sleep peacefully Clay," one fan commented.
"Thank goodness they won, but I didn't need that anxiety before bed 😭thanks Holmes," another wrote.
"Never doubted Cardiac Clay," one posted.

Luis Gil could win AL Pitcher of the Month after another dominant performance

Luis Gil has built a strong case for himself after another dominant outing to close out May with a nail-biting win. In May, he pitched to a clean record of 6-0 and posted an excellent ERA of 0.70. The righty has only allowed three earned runs this month across 38.2 innings.

Wednesday's start was another example as he improved his season ERA to 1.99. Despite having made his debut in 2021, Gil still qualifies as rookie and could be on his way to winning one.

However, he faces stiff competition from the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shota Imanaga and Paul Skenes, as all of them have been equally impressive if not more.
