Max Scherzer will certainly miss chatting with Jacob deGrom throughout the season. The two struck up quite the friendship in 2022, playing for the New York Mets. But that's over now, as deGrom signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers.
Now that the two are no longer teammates, Scherzer wasn't shy about letting the media know how he feels about deGrom. He thinks deGrom is one of the best pitchers in today's game.
"I would've loved to pitch with him more. I think the world of him. When he's on the mound, it's incredbible what he can do. Never seen anything like it. Wish him nothing but the best. He's going to go out there and absolutely kill it. That's the way I see it," said Max Scherzer.
Those are some pretty strong words from a pitcher who many around the league would also say is one of baseball's best. The only thing that has held these two All-Stars back is their injury history. Last year, Scherzer was dealing with an oblique injury while deGrom dealt with a shoulder injury.
It was a bit disappointing to see for New York Mets fans. If both could have been healthy all year, their rotation would have been quite scary.
Health is the only thing that hinders Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom
The only problem with Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom's game is their ability to stay healthy. It's not a knock on them; baseball is such a long season, it's hard to stay healthy.
In 2018, when deGrom had zero injury issues, he had a career year. He led the league in ERA (1.70), ERA+ (218), FIP (1.98), and HR9 (0.4).
Jacob deGrom has elite-level abilities. When he's on, there aren't a lot of batters that have hope when they dig into the batter's box.
Scherzer gives off that same dominant presence as well. Not only does Scherzer's repertoire contain impressive pitches, but he's also one of the most intense pitchers to play the game. He looks like a psychopath on the mound, striking fear into the batter's eyes.
If these two can stay healthy, there's no telling the amount of success they can have. It wouldn't be surprising if both Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom were in the running for a Cy Young Award this season.
