With a record of 24-11 since June 15, the New York Mets are the best-performing team in baseball. After an early-season period that looked sure to precede another disappointing campaign, the club now occupies the top NL Wild Card spot.
As such, the needs of the team have shifted alongside their ascent to playoff contention. Chief among these concerns is relief pitching. The Mets currently rank 17th in bullpen ERA, with their 4.05 ranking among the lowest of playoff-contending teams.
For president of baseball operations David Stearns, finding arms to help the bullpen is a must. Today, we are profiling three relievers who could certainly help the Mets should they be obtained by the July 30 trade deadline.
Top Relief Pitchers for the New York Mets to Explore
3. Tanner Scott
Although many things have gone wrong for the Miami Marlins this season, relief pitching is not necessarily one of them. When it comes to their bullpen, few arms have been as affective as Tanner Scott.

Now 6-5 on the season, the 30 year-old Scott was recently named an All-Star for the first time in his career. Scott's 1.18 ERA leads the Marlins' bullpen, and would be a perfect fit in a Mets relief corps that lacks left-handed skill.
2. Will Vest
Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest is set to smash his career numbers in terms of playing time this year. In 45 innings, the 29 year-old right hander is 2-3 with a 3.15 ERA.
Seeing as though the Detroit Tigers will likely not make the playoffs, but appear intent on holding on to Tarik Skubal, other pitchers will be shown the door. Vest will become arbitration-eligible next season, and is among the best value relievers that the New York Mets could hope to acquire.
1. Kyle Finnegan
Although Kyle Finnegan may be putting up a career season, the Washington Nationals reliever has not had an easy go against the New York Mets this season. In 5 games against the team this year, Finnegan owns a 5.40 ERA.

However, the 32 year-old has been largely effective in 2024. Now 2-4 with a 2.47 ERA, the 2013 6th rounder leads MLB in games finished with 41 such appearances. Given the struggles of Jake Diekman this season, perhaps Finnegan could be slotted into a set-up role for Edwin Diaz as the Mets seek to capture a postseason berth.
