Over the course of the 2024 MLB season, and particularily since the All-Star break in July, we have seen some incredible performances around the league. Now, it's time to assemble the very best of big-league talent into one All-Star team for the 2024 season.
Based on performances across both the NL and the AL, we are honoring the end of the season by assembling an All-Star team that seeks to encapsulate superlative talent.
2024 MLB All-Star Team Selections
Starting Pitcher - Paul Skenes
The fact that Paul Skenes did not begin his season with the Pittsburgh Pirates until May may hurt his NL Rookie of the Year hopes. However, since May, Skenes has been unstoppable.
"How are you even supposed to hit Paul Skenes?!?! He strikes out Juan Soto AND Aaron Judge with straight filth" - MLB
The 22-year-old finished the season with an ERA of 1.96, a record of 11-3, and 170 strikeouts in 133 innings. Had Skenes have begun his season on opening day, the 6-foot-6 flamethrower would be in the running for the NL Cy Young, let alone Rookie of the Year.
Catcher - Salvador Perez
Sal Perez is the only member of the World Series-winning 2015 Kansas City Royals to be heading back into the postseason with the club nearly a decade later. At 34 years of age, the Venezuelan played with the heart and energy of a player half his age.
Along with Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, Perez was the only catcher in MLB to log 100 RBIs this season, while his 27 homers were his most since he led the AL in 2021. As the captain of a young team with big hopes, Sal deserves full credit for setting an example this season.
First Base - Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
As his club posted a mediocre 74-88 record to miss the postseason, Vladimir Guerrero kept his head held high, and had a mammoth season for the Toronto Blue Jays.
"#BlueJays #Toronto Vladimir Guerrero Jr." - Tony Menendez
A 100-RBI hitter for the second season of his career, Guerrero's .323 average was second among all active hitters, while the 25-year-old hit 30 home runs for the first time since 2021. Moreover, despite his size, Vladdy remains an agile and capable first baseman.
Second Base - Ketel Marte
While Ketel Marte will be holding his breath on Monday to see his team's postseason fortunes, the Dominican can be very proud of the season he has had in Arizona. Marte's 36 home runs were the most by an MLB second baseman by far, and his 23 doubles and pair of triples put Ketel Marte's speed on full display.
Shortstop - Bobby Witt Jr.
The 2024 AL batting champ, Bobby Witt Jr. of Kansas City posted a .332 average in 161 games, and also stole 31 bases while clobbering 109 RBIs and 109 homers.
"BOBBY WITT JR., GRAND ROYAL" - MLB
Witt, just 24, possesses a unique mixture of speed, power, contact, and abilities in the field to make him a generational star. Regarded as the architect of KC's formidable run to the postseason this year, Witt Jr. will remain an MLB superstar for many years to come.
Third Base - Jose Ramirez
Jose Ramirez has played in Cleveland since making his MLB debut in 2013, and has quietly become one of baseball's most dependable hitters. In addition to finishing the season with two homers and six RBIs in three games, Ramirez posted the third 30 homer season of his career, matching his career high of 39. With 41 steals, Ramirez also joined the 30/30 club.
Left Field - Teoscar Hernandez
Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez' one-year, $23.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers was the proverbial cherry-on-top for the team's offseason that saw over $1 billion pledged in contracts. A two-time Silver Slugger, Hernandez' 33 homers were a career high, and his 160 hits were within four of setting one as well.
Center Field - Aaron Judge
Had Aaron Judge not gone on a three-week home run drought between late August and mid-September, the New York Yankees captain might have broke his own record. In 2022, Judge set a single-season home run record with 62 of them.
"Aaron Judge becomes the first player since Barry Bonds in 2004 to finish a season with a slugging percentage over .700" - Talkin' Yanks
In 2024, the big man finished the season with 58 homers and 144 RBIs, enough to lead MLB in each category. Coupled with more than a couple game-saving plays in the outfield this season, Judge led all of MLB in WAR, touting a 10.8 figure.
Right Field - Juan Soto
Juan Soto's first season in the Bronx certainly had a fairytale element to it. After arriving to the Yankees via a trade with the Padres last December, Soto slugged a career-high 41 home runs and came within one of hitting his career record in RBIs. Although a lot of offseason negotiation lies ahead, Juan Soto is a 2024 All-Star in every sense of the term.
DH - Shohei Ohtani
Shohei Ohtani's debut season with the Dodgers will go down in history. Not only did the Japanese superstar become the first player ever to hit 50 homers and steal 50 bags, but he also led the NL in on-base percentage, OPS, total bases and more. With his arm already being included in discussions about postseason pitching, Ohtani's bat was enough to make him an undoubted All-Star this season.
