On Tuesday evening, it was announced that Blake Snell would be signing a five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first big-time signing of the offseason for the defending World Series champs, the move has fans thinking about how much better LA could be in 2025.
Snell's singing comes amid rumors that the Dodgers are also making a big play for NPB All-Star Roki Sasaki, who is set to debut in the international free agency period. The star-studded possibilities led MLB analyst Buster Olney to take to X to preview the potential firepower of the club's 2025 rotation.
Although he did not pitch in 2024, Shohei Ohtani is expected to have recovered enough from 2023 surgery to return to the rotation in 2025. Undoubtedly the headliner of the rotation, Olney's post highlighted that Ohtani is far from the only superstar likely to be in the team's rotation next year. This has some fans crying foul.
By deferring most of Ohtani's contract, the Los Angeles Dodgers were able to free up a lot of cash. In turn, this was spent on securing contracts for pitchers like Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow, who received a combined pledge of some $461 million last offseason. Add Blake Snell and Clayton Kershaw, and the rotation is looking like none other.
"MLB has to fix this, people are gonna lose interest. Simple as that" - claimed a fan
"Many will stop watching because it's ludicrous at this point" - complained another
"Dying sport, sad!" - was another comment
Roki Sasaki is an inclusion that caught the attention of fans. A star pitcher in NPB, the 23-year-old will come to MLB in 2025 as an international amateur free agent. Although several teams appear in the hunt, rumors of a 'nefarious' deal between the flamethrower and the Dodgers have some thinking that a deal in LA is already pre-determined.
"Already gave them Roki" - pondered a fan
"So the Roki, handshake agreement is true?" - asked another
"Sasaki doesn't play for the Dodgers" - came a final reminder
Dodgers GM explains philosophy behind Blake Snell pick-up
A two-time Cy Young winner from his years with the Rays and San Diego Padres, Blake Snell is certainly one of the best. For GM Brandon Gomes, pitching is the story this offseason, as he confirmed to MLB.com earlier this month:
“Obviously, we can never have enough pitching, as we’ve learned, so pitching will be a priority, as it’ll be for every other team.”
Having run into some issues regarding the vitality of the rotation in the 2024 postseason, Gomes is attempting to ensure that problem is never encountered again - regardless of what that might cost.
