The Texas Rangers have signed free-agent outfielder Robbie Grossman to a one-year, $2 million contract. The deal could pay him an additional $3 million in performance bonuses, as reported by Joel Sherman.

Grossman is a switch hitter but fares better against left-handed hitting, making him the perfect platoon option. The Rangers could potentially use a platoon of Grossman and Josh Smith in left field.

Grossman spent last season with the Detroit Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. He slashed .209/310/.311 in 477 plate appearances.

While the acquisition doesn't move the needle, Grossman is a very capable outfielder. He can play both corner outfield positions or fill in as a designated hitter.

"Big winter to miss the playoffs" one fan tweeted.
"Will be fighting for 3rd place all year" another fan explained.

Fans aren't sold on the Texas Rangers. Even with their huge offseason additions, they still expect them to struggle in the American League West.

The Rangers haven't given their fans any reason to believe they will be World Series contenders. Despite signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien last winter, they still weren't able to qualify for the 2022 postseason.

Jacob deGrom's availability will make or break for the Texas Rangers

The Rangers' biggest offseason signing was Jacob deGrom. While deGrom is one of the best pitchers in the league, he doesn't come without injury concerns. The team is witnessing that already, as the righty has reported left-side tightness in the opening days of Spring Training. The team pushed back his throwing program for a day or two as a precaution.

If that left-side tightness turns into something more, the Rangers will have to rely on other pitchers to step up. Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Heaney, and Taylor Hearn are some names that come to mind.

At the plate, they can't afford slow starts from hitters like Marcus Semien again. Semien posted an abysmal .157 batting average in his first 34 games last season. He ended the season with a .248/.304/.429 slash line, 26 home runs, and 83 RBIs.

If the Texas Rangers plan on qualifying for a spot in the postseason, everyone will need to be at the top of their game. They play in the American League West, which the Houston Astros have dominated for the past six seasons.

The Texas Rangers open their 2023 season against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, March 30 at Globe Life Park.
