The New York Mets scratched Kodai Senga from his scheduled Spring Training start on Saturday. The righty is experiencing discomfort at the base of his right index finger.
Senga will undergo some testing to determine exactly what is wrong with his finger. Until then, he'll likely take it slow as it's Spring Training, and there's no reason to battle through an injury.
He's one of a couple of Mets pitchers dealing with an injury. Jose Quintana was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his ribs. The team hasn't provided a timetable for his return since announcing his injury, and he may miss months.
This isn't how the Mets envisioned their season starting. They generated a lot of hype in the offseason with their moves. The front office hopes these injuries are minor as they have a chance to compete for a World Series title this season.
"Here we go," one fan tweeted.
"It hurts being a Mets fan... seriously," said another fan.
New York Mets fans aren't happy with the news. They're worried as he's somebody who's no stranger to missing games. He's only thrown more than 150 innings once in his career.
Fans are hoping this injury is minor. They'll need Senga in their rotation if they want to compete for a National League East title.
The New York Mets' pitching staff needs to get and stay healthy
The New York Mets have a dominant starting rotation, but they must get and stay healthy. Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander will lead them. The Mets and Verlander agreed to a two-year, $86.6 million deal.
Right behind Verlander is Max Scherzer, another guy who is no stranger to the IL. He started 23 games for the Mets last season, compiling an 11-5 record with a 2.29 ERA and 173 strikeouts.
Kodai Senga and Carlos Carrasco round out their number three and fourth starters, with Quintana hurt. That leaves them missing a fifth starter.
They have David Peterson and Tylor Megil, who could step up. Robertson has some experience starting but is more comfortable in the bullpen. Megil started nine games for the Mets last season. He finished the year with a 4-2 record on a 5.13 ERA.
It will be interesting to see how the New York Mets navigate their starting rotation with Opening Day right around the corner.
