The New York Mets got punched in the gut when All-Star closer Edwin Diaz went down with an injury. The injury occurred after Team Puerto Rico defeated Team Dominican Republic 5-2. Díaz was rushed by his teammates after he closed out the game to advance to the quarterfinals. Something gave way in his knee as they were jumping up and down, and he fell.

Díaz will most likely be out for the entire season. With the news, the team's attention has shifted to Zack Britton, who is still a free agent. On Thursday, he threw in front of a couple of teams, including the Mets.

Losing Díaz hurts. Last season, he became one of the best closers in the game. In 61 appearances last year, he held a 1.31 ERA while racking up 32 saves.

Zack Britton missed almost the entire 2022 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He returned in late September to throw a few games for the New York Yankees. This is now the third time he has pitched in front of teams this offseason.

"Sadly Britton is no Díaz but gotta do something. I get it" one fan tweeted.
"Worth a shot but you have to temper expectations, has to be a reason he hasn't signed yet" said another fan.

New York Mets fans aren't too excited to bring in Britton. But Opening Day is right around the corner, and there isn't much left available. Aside from trades, Britton is the best pitcher available.

Fans recall Buck Showalter's decision not to use Britton in the 2016 American League Wild Card game. In extra innings, he stood in the bullpen as Showalter called on Ubaldo Jimenez. Britton was an All-Star that year and felt he should have received the ball. The Baltimore Orioles lost that game to the Toronto Blue Jays, ending their season.

The New York Mets need to salvage their bullpen

The New York Mets will quickly need to figure out if Zack Britton is their man or not. As overlooked as the position is sometimes, closers can be the reason a team wins or loses.

This team cannot rely on just its starters. They need to find a closer they are comfortable with if they want to be competitive this season.
