The New York Yankees are getting outstanding play from their prospects in spring training. Anthony Volpe has especially been opening some eyes. In 30 at-bats, he's hitting .333 with two home runs and four stolen bases.
Volpe is the team's No. 1-ranked prospect. The Yankees selected him in the first round of the 2019 draft. He's regarded as one of the best bets in the 2019 class.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Volpe is "very much in the running" to be on the team's opening day roster.
The team is riddled with infielders, so Volpe's path to the big leagues won't be as simple as putting him in the opening day lineup. They must find a trade for either Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Gleyber Torres or both.
They also have DJ LeMahieu, who's healthy this year and should get a good amount of work at second base this season. While Volpe has been tearing it up in spring training, the team may not have anywhere to put him.
"Very awesome to hear this. Need Volpe breaking camp and I think Dominguez is not far behind," one fan tweeted.
"He's leading the competition!" another fan tweeted.
New York Yankees fans would love to see Volpe and other MLB prospects like Jasson Dominguez called up. It looks like the pair are ready for the big stage.
While fans are excited at the possibility of Volpe being on the opening day roster, they understand this is just speculation. They won't truly celebrate until the decision is officially announced.
Anthony Volpe has support within the New York Yankees organization
Not only has New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoken glowingly about Volpe, but team owner Hal Steinbrenner has as well. To make the Yankees' 40-man roster, these are the two guys you want to impress.
Reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge recently spoke to the media about what he's looking for on the roster this season. He hammered the fact that he only wants to play with the best players and players who will help the team. He doesn't care if the player is a prospect or a seasoned veteran. Judge just wants to win, and they have the talent to do it. They look like serious contenders to win the World Series this year.
With opening day approaching, the Yankees must decide on Anthony Volpe soon. Can they figure out how to make the lineup work with an influx of infielders, or will Volpe see another year in the minor leagues?
